Quick answer: The desert closest to Marrakesh is Agafay, a stony desert about 40 km (45–50 minutes) south-west of the city that you can visit in half a day. For sand dunes you have to go much further: Zagora is about 360 km away (around 7 hours by road) and the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga about 560 km (8–9 hours), so plan two to three days.
We are based in Marrakesh and take guests into Agafay every day. Here is how the three desert options compare, so you can match the desert to the time you have.
The three deserts compared
| Agafay | Zagora | Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distance from Marrakesh | About 40 km | About 360 km | About 560 km |
| Drive time | 45–50 minutes | About 7 hours | 8–9 hours |
| Landscape | Stony hills with views of the Atlas | Palm groves of the Draa Valley, small dunes | Tall orange sand dunes |
| Shortest sensible trip | Half a day | 2 days, 1 night | 3 days, 2 nights |
| Best for | Short stays, sunsets, pools and activities | A taste of the south on a tight schedule | The classic Sahara dunes |
Agafay: the desert on Marrakesh’s doorstep
Agafay is what most people mean by “the Marrakesh desert”. It is not sand but a rocky landscape of bare hills and plateaus between the city and the Atlas Mountains. The camps there have pools, restaurants and yurts, and the sunset is the main event.
In one afternoon you can ride a camel or a quad, swim and have dinner with a show. Pool day passes start at 45€, our camel or quad package with a meal at 60€, and a night in a Be Agafay yurt at 320€ for two. All the options are on our Agafay trips page.

Zagora: two days via the Draa Valley
Zagora sits in the Draa Valley, about 7 hours from Marrakesh over the High Atlas and through Ouarzazate. The drive passes kasbahs and long palm groves, and the dunes near Zagora are small compared with those at Merzouga.
A two-day trip means roughly 14 hours on the road for one night in a desert camp. It suits travellers who want a taste of the south but cannot spare three days. If dunes are your priority, Merzouga is the better use of the time.
Merzouga: the real Sahara dunes
Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga, is where you find the tall orange dunes from the photos. It is about 560 km from Marrakesh, 8–9 hours of driving each way, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 m. Most people do it as a three-day loop with stops at Aït Benhaddou and the Dades or Todra gorges, sleeping one night in the dunes.
We arrange private multi-day Sahara trips with drivers we know well. Our 3-day Sahara route shows how the days work.
How to choose
- One day or less: Agafay. Go in the afternoon for the sunset and dinner.
- Two days: a night in Agafay is the relaxed choice. Zagora works if you accept about 14 hours of driving for one night.
- Three days or more: Merzouga, for the real dunes.
- With young children or older relatives: Agafay, because the long mountain drives to the Sahara are tiring.
