Agafay gives you wide desert views, a sunset over the Atlas Mountains, and a pool, a dinner or an activity, all 45–50 minutes from the medina. It is not worth it if you are expecting tall orange sand dunes. Agafay is a stony desert of bare hills; the Sahara dunes at Merzouga are about 560 km and 8–9 hours’ drive away.

Why it’s worth it
- It’s close. You can leave your riad after breakfast and be back for dinner, or go in the afternoon for the sunset.
- The light. In the late afternoon the hills turn gold, and in winter and spring the snow-capped High Atlas often sits on the horizon.
- Comfort. The camps have pools, shaded lounges and proper kitchens. A desert afternoon does not have to mean roughing it.
- Things to do. Camel rides, quad bikes and paragliding happen in and around Agafay, and sunrise balloon flights take off near Marrakech.
- A night in the desert without a long drive. You can sleep in a yurt under a dark sky and be back in Marrakech the next morning.
The honest downsides
- No sand dunes. Agafay is stone and earth. If your picture of Morocco is rolling orange sand, read our sand dunes guide before you book.
- You won’t be alone. There are many camps across Agafay, and sunset is the busiest time. You will often see other camps on the hills.
- Prices are resort prices. A pool and lunch pass costs 45–100€ per adult, and drinks are usually extra.
- Dust and heat. The last stretch to most camps is a dirt track, and July afternoons average around 36°C.
- Transport adds up for small groups. A private car is 70€ per vehicle: cheap for six people, expensive for one.
Who should skip Agafay

How to get the most for your money
- Go in the afternoon. The light is better, the heat is lower and you see the sunset. Afternoon slots usually end with dinner.
- Combine things. Our camel or quad, pool and meal package starts at 60€ and covers a whole afternoon in one booking.
- Share the car. At 70€ per vehicle for up to 7 people, transport costs 10€ each in a full car.
- Stay one night if you can. The stars and the sunrise are the parts day visitors miss.
